Rock Inn and Roll Inn
Cinnamon BunRock Inn and Roll Inn is both a lodging house and a threshold into Port Royal’s wider social and institutional world. Its comfortable rooms, welcoming proprietors, clean atmosphere, and position near the city’s guild activity give Broccoli Bunch a temporary home while the character moves from arrival and preparation toward formal membership in the Exploration Guild and departure on an expedition.
Appearance and Setting
Rock Inn and Roll Inn stands on one of Port Royal’s tight, steep roads, in a city of crowded buildings, overhead lines, cable cars, and noisy pipes. The establishment is unmistakable from the street: a large building with three stories, a steep bronze-colored roof, chimneys, and checkered windows through which diners can be seen gathered around round tables. A sign above the entrance identifies it as Rock Inn and Roll Inn, preserving the playful name created by the building’s unusual history.
The inn offers a marked contrast to Port Royal’s harsher street environment. Outside, the city’s smells are strong and its infrastructure is loud, with steam pipes clanking and whistles cutting through conversations. Inside, Broccoli Bunch encounters fresh, pleasant scents and suspects that magic keeps the city’s unpleasant odors away. This sensory contrast makes the inn feel less like a mere commercial stop than a protected interior within an overwhelming metropolis.
Structure and History
The building is shaped roughly like a C. It contains a single establishment but retains the spatial memory of two separate businesses: two large bar areas on opposite streets are joined by a newer-looking addition. The arrangement reflects the fact that the inn was once two competing establishments, the Rock Inn and the Roll Inn.
Julien and Juliette originally operated the rival inns for the same customers. Their competition ended when they fell in love and combined the businesses into one larger establishment. The inn’s name therefore records both conflict and reconciliation. Its architecture makes that history visible: the two former sides remain legible even after the relationship between them has changed.
Broccoli Bunch’s Stay
Juliette has promised Broccoli Bunch a free room, and the accommodation proves substantially better than the room Broccoli Bunch previously had in Rockstack. The room contains a single bed against the far wall, a dresser, a small desk, and a window opening onto a courtyard at the rear. The building’s C-shaped plan gives the room an inward-facing view, while the inn’s two street-facing bar areas connect the private lodging space to its public life.
The room becomes a place of practical recovery and preparation. Broccoli Bunch sleeps there with Orange, wakes after a night spent cuddling the spirit companion, gets dressed, gathers equipment, and leaves ready to conduct business in Port Royal. The comfort of the bed and the unusual cleanliness of the inn are treated as notable features rather than background conveniences. Julien jokingly attributes the inn’s coziness to a secret innkeeper skill, refusing to explain the source of its comfort.
The inn also supports Broccoli Bunch’s logistical routine. After visiting the Exploration Guild and acquiring supplies from a large general store, Broccoli Bunch returns to Rock Inn and Roll Inn with arms full of provisions and other equipment that still need to be repacked. Julien greets the returning adventurer and asks how the adventure went, while Broccoli Bunch announces temporary membership in the Exploration Guild before taking the purchases upstairs or back to the room.
Julien and Juliette
Julien is already awake in the morning, serving breakfast to the few guests present and greeting Broccoli Bunch with a jovial manner. His hospitality gives the inn a conversational, domestic atmosphere even as Broccoli Bunch prepares for increasingly consequential work. He asks about Broccoli Bunch’s rest, offers breakfast, and later asks about the day’s adventure and whether any ships were seen.
Juliette’s influence is present through the promised free room, while Julien handles much of the visible morning service. Together, they embody the inn’s central principle: a place created through partnership and maintained through ordinary care. Their relationship is not presented as an abstract romance detached from work. It is expressed through the merger of competing businesses, the continued operation of the combined building, and the practical welcome extended to a traveler.
The proprietors also provide a gentle counterweight to institutional pressure. Broccoli Bunch becomes so nervous before the first Exploration Guild expedition that the character paces repeatedly across the bar. Julien threatens to make Broccoli Bunch sweep the floors, and when Broccoli Bunch offers to do exactly that, he instead sends the adventurer out and tells the character to have a safe trip. The exchange turns nervous anticipation into a comic but genuine farewell.
Narrative Function
Rock Inn and Roll Inn links private shelter with public mobility. Broccoli Bunch arrives in Port Royal through a costly and complicated transport system, encounters crowded roads and unfamiliar city infrastructure, and then finds a stable point from which to approach guards, the Exploration Guild, shops, and expedition arrangements. The inn’s location makes it an operational base for movement through the city without becoming an institution that controls that movement.
Its importance grows through contrast. The Exploration Guild uses documents, temporary membership terms, travel benefits, expense claims, and formal expedition summaries to define Broccoli Bunch’s place within an organized system. The inn supplies the less formal conditions that make participation possible: a bed, food, equipment storage and repacking space, conversation, encouragement, and a send-off. Even when the guild later treats Broccoli Bunch as a liability and orders the character out, the inn remains associated with welcome rather than exclusion.
The establishment also prepares the transition from local wandering to expeditionary travel. Broccoli Bunch’s stay begins with sensory discovery and domestic comfort, continues through shopping and guild registration, and culminates in restless anticipation before departure. In that sequence, Rock Inn and Roll Inn functions as a staging ground: the place where a newcomer to Port Royal becomes equipped, connected, and emotionally ready to leave the city again.
